Giostra della Quintana

The ?Giostra della Quintana?, in its current modern edition, refers to a precise date, but an entirely chance circumstance. In 1946, the ?Societ di Mutuo Soccorso fra operai, agricoltori ed altri cittadini in Foligno? (Mutual Aid Society of Laborers, Farmers, and Other Citizens of Foligno) wanted to celebrate the 85th anniversary of its foundation in an appropriate way, and in such a way that it would leave an everlasting memory. Among the various ideas for the celebrations, that proposed by a member of the society, Emilio De Pasquale, "a keen follower of the town?s historic documentation", was accepted without any reservations whatsoever. He proposed resurrecting an old competition on horseback in period costumes: a horse race/jousting tournament held in Foligno on 10 February 1613, for described in minute detail by the chancellor of the time, Ettore Tesorieri. This text had been transcribed from the ancient document and published in 1906 by Foligno scholar Monsignor Michele Faloci Pulignani, as nuptialia (wedding booklets). In 1935, in the newspaper ?La Fiamma?, an article of local news entitled ?Let?s Bring Back the Giostra dell'Inquintana?, proposed the resurrection of the horseback competition, as a means for attracting out-of-towners and to render the ?Settembre Folignate? more characteristic. The fundamental characteristics of the old games are described, and the article ends with an appeal to the Tourism Brigade to bring back the Giostra dell'Inquintana. But this would take time, and it was brought back only eleven years later.

The reasons leading the members of the Commission, including enthusiasts of the town?s history, to enthusiastically accept the proposal were not only connected with the initial proposal, or dictated by a clear historic-re-evocative conscience, which however became clearer as time went by. Everyone had an idea of the dimensions, but most of all they saw the possibility to rediscover in that festive event an occasion for gathering and harmony among the entire population, within the walls of a town that had been tried and devastated by the events of the last world war.
