Mercato delle Gaite

The ?Mercato delle Gaite? is inspired by the ancient division of Bevagna into four quarters called ?Gaite?, on which the town?s administrative organization was based during the Middle Ages.

The purpose of the event is to reconstruct, with the greatest possible historic precision and details, the everyday lives of the inhabitants of Bevagna during the period between 1250 and 1350.

For this purpose, starting in 1983 a group of scholars has carefully examined the 16th-century Statute of the Town of Bevagna, drawing the information necessary for a historic reconstruction of its political, administrative, economic, and social life.

So for ten days in late June, Bevagna takes a dive into its remote past. The old shops of the medieval masters reopen their doors and resume their activities, and the streets become populated with Bevagna?s citizenry who, dressed in period costumes, lived the everyday lives of their ancestors, eating, working, and playing just like them.

Today, as in the past, the town is divided into four gaite, but today each competes with the others in an attempt to give a historically faithful interpretation of the role it played during the Middle Ages. The spirit of competition is at the basis of the lively event, and can be seen in the participation in four contests: the market contest, trades contest, food contest, and archery sports contest. Using a complex scoring system, with points assigned by professors who are experts in the various fields and are called upon to judge the historic accuracy, on the last day of the event the winner is announced, and receives the victory ?palio?, or banner. The strong spirit of belonging to one?s gaita makes the competitions very interesting and inspires a continuing improvement of the gaite?s proposals in the various sectors, with an obvious benefit in terms of general quality of the event.

Today the Mercato delle Gaite is considered one of the most important historic events in Umbria, and is a member of the Regional Association of Historic Events.
