Roman house
Roman house. On Via di Visiale, to the left of the staircase of the municipal building. The building, dating from the 1st century AD, and already restored in the 2nd century, was brought to light in 1885 during the excavations beneath the Town Hall. What remains of the “house”, which may be deduced as having belonged to Vespasia Polla, Vespasian’s mother, are the atrium with its black and white mosaic floor, the pluvium surrounded by a wavy mosaic interrupted by a well, the mosaic floors of four rooms at the sides of the atrium, and the large room at the back used for family meetings, along the right side of which, slightly raised, runs the triclinium, while on the left is the peristyle.
